What causes scabies?

Scabies is caused by an infestation of tiny mites known as Sarcoptes scabiei, which are indeed classified as insects. These mites burrow into the skin, leading to intense itching and a rash due to an allergic reaction to the mites and their waste products. The condition is highly contagious and is typically spread through close physical contact with an infested person.

In contrast, fungi, bacteria, and viruses are responsible for other types of infections and skin conditions. For instance, fungal infections might cause issues like ringworm or athlete's foot, bacterial infections can result in conditions like impetigo or cellulitis, and viruses can lead to ailments such as warts or herpes. However, none of these pathogens is responsible for the specific condition of scabies, which distinctly involves the infestation of a parasitic insect. Understanding the nature of scabies as an infestation helps frame the correct approach for prevention and treatment.
